Writing Workshop:
Student Assessment
Ongoing assessment is a key component of successful writing workshop classrooms. Assessing students' needs across various stages of the writing process is crucial to helping them become proficient writers.

Conferences are one of the best opportunities teachers have to individually assess and support student writers. Try this Conference Log to help improve the focus of your conferences and keep your notes organized.

Part of the trick to ongoing assessment is creating structures that evaluate students' work throughout the writing process. Assessing the behaviors and work of students as they gather in their writing folders and writers' notebooks is as important as assessing their final published pieces of writing. Try these Writing Folder and Writer's Notebook Assessment rubrics to assess students and create accountability for best work at every stage of the process.

We know how important ongoing assessment is to successful writing workshop classrooms. That is why each
of our Writing Fundamentals lessons includes conference questions to help
guide teachers in their daily assessments, and each Writing Fundamentals Unit of Study includes a unit-specific
