One of the standards for K–8 writers is that they write for a variety of purposes and for a variety of audiences. Support teachers in making this happen by creating whole-school events and writing opportunities that will encourage students to publish often.
Whole-School Publishing Events
  • Host monthly, themed writing contests. Give award ribbons and display students' published pieces on the office bulletin board, or invite winning students to read their work over the intercom.
  • Put up bulletin boards in unexpected places and invite students to contribute published pieces. For example, a bulletin board in the lunchroom is the perfect place to showcase students' published work such as lunchbox recipes, essays about lunchroom experiences, how-to pieces, advice columns, and other writing topics. Turn your school restrooms into poetry places by framing and hanging students' poems.
  • Ask the school librarian to donate some wall space in the library to display students' published book reviews and literary essays.
  • Host monthly poetry readings during lunch hours. Students who participate and read their own poems can sit at a special writers' table.
  • Designate a section of your school office bulletin/information board for literary information. Keep an eye out for local literary events, writing contests, and calls for writing. Make the information public to the school community.
  • Check out these sites for publishing opportunities for kids and share the information with your teachers.
