Book Recommendations
"My best friend is [someone] who gives me a book I [haven't] read."
    – Abraham Lincoln

Don't you love receiving book recommendations from a friend? Your students will too. Engage your class in a book recommendation study. Invite students to write personalized book recommendations for their classmates and school community. Create a bulletin board with the students' book recommendations and colored-in copies of book covers.

Summer Reading

What will your students do this summer? As teachers, we know the importance of summer learning. We all hope our students will have summer days filled with books, sandcastles, art and music lessons, travel, and library visits. Unfortunately we can't make that happen for every child.

What we can do is support our students and families by providing them with information and resources to enrich summer reading opportunities.

Host a Book Drive

Hosting a book drive will take some time and planning. But if your students leave for summer break with books in their hands and they spend time this summer reading, your efforts will be duly rewarded. Help counteract summer reading loss by hosting a book drive in your school.

“Research consistently shows that struggling readers lose ground over the summer. Of even greater concern is the fact that these losses are cumulative, creating a wider gap each year between more proficient and less proficient students.”

Talk to your teachers about summer learning loss. Stress the importance of encouraging summer learning and preparing families for enriching summer opportunities.

Distribute the "Let's Do Something About Summer Reading Loss" list of ideas at your next faculty meeting and discuss ways your community can counteract the summer learning slump.
